Multi Touch Web Browser For Motorola Droid 2.0.1/2.1
Motorola Droid users on Verizon Wireless have yet another port for enabling Multi Touch on their Android phone. Remember the Motorola Milestone ROM ported to Droid? Well this time the port is only for the web browser. This is for those of you who do not want to change the entire ROM, but only get the multitouch capabilities for your browsing experience.
An AllDroid forum member has extracted Motorola Milestone’s multi touch capable web browser and ported it to Motorola Droid. Motorola Milestone is the European version of it’s US counterpart Droid, which due to some US patent issues has the required hardware but not the firmware for multi touch support. The soon to be released Google Nexus One also suffers from the same patent laws.
Here are the steps to install the multi touch web browser on your Droid phone. Note that you need to first root your Droid before you go ahead with these instructions.
We recommend you to do a nandroid backup to back up your current Browser files ( Browser.apk, Browser.odex) which will be patched during the porting. The port currently works for 2.0.1 as well as 2.1.
1. Remount /system to RW
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
2. Now delete the browser file /system/app/Browser.odex
3. Download the Browser files from AllDroid. Extract them on your PC.
4. Now use adb shell to push the files on to your device.
adb push libmtwebcore.so /system/lib
adb push Browser.apk /system/app/Browser.apk
You are done. Enjoy the iPhone like multi-touch features, including the pinch-to-zoom and tap in your Droid’s web browser.
