Enable Multi Touch On Motorola Droid

Motorola Droid users who are on the Verizon carrier have some good news. They can now get full multi touch capabilities on their Droid phone, such as pinch to zoom and tap functionality similar to that of an iPhone.

Well, if you are wondering how come your mobile phone could be magically turned into an iPhone, the fact is that all Droid phones have the required hardware for multi touch functionality. However due to some iPhone patents, the version of Motorola Droid released in US has been ridden of the software that brings multi touch into action. Sadly, the same is the case for the soon to be released Google Nexus One phones.

Motorola Milestone, the European version of Motorola Droid, has all multi touch features. A forum member of AllDroid has managed to port the Android ROM from the European version to the Droid available in US. After installing this Android ROM on your Motorola droid phone, you can start using pinch to zoom and tap features in your phone’s web browser, pictures and Google Maps application. The port is still an alpha version and does not yet support GPS.

It is recommended that you have SPRecovery-0.10.1 or higher installed; 0.11.1 or higher strongly recommended.

Here are the installation instructions for this ROM:

1. Unzip the downloaded file on your PC.

2. Create the directory structure for the backup on your Droid phone.

mkdir -p /sdcard/nandroid/console=ttyS2,115200n8/miledroid-rom

3.  Use adb shell to push system.tar and nandroid.md5 to the above made directory.

adb push <local_path> <remote_path>

4. Create a nandroid backup by the method of your choice, either

with the menu options in SPRecovery-0.11.1 or higher, or

with "nandroid-mobile.sh –backup –norecovery" in SPRecovery-0.10.1 or higher.

5. Use nandroid to "restore" the "backup" of the multitouch:

"nandroid-mobile.sh –restore –subname miledroid-rom"

6. Format /data, either by manually going in and removing all of it’s files or by running "format DATA:" from an ADB shell in recovery mode

7. Reboot your device and enjoy the iPhone like multi touch functions on Droid phone.
