HTC phones are a rage, and many times before they have been rooted. This time, it’s HTC EVO 4G which got rooted, even before it hit the stores. If you are a user of other HTC phones, then we have you covered with our articles on how to root HTC Desire, get HTC Desire custom ROM for Nexus One with HTC Sense UI, HTC Espresso Port For G1 and MyTouch 3G, and so on.

A forum member of XDA Developers has given the guide to root HTC EVO 4G along with all the required file downloads. While the root allows you to flash custom ROMs, boot into a custom recovery, and write to system, boot and recovery partitions through recovery, it does not however allow you to write to system or recovery while on android. Also, you cannot flash a custom recovery by booting while holding down Vol key and powering on.

Attention: Do not download OTA update from Spring or use a RUU. Or else you will end up losing the root.

How To Flash Custom ROM In HTC EVO 4G [Flashing Recovery]

If you want to flash a custom ROM on your EVO, then you need to flash the recovery image.

1. Download evorecovery file and unzip it.

2. Plug in your phone to your PC and use the following shell command to boot it in recovery mode

adb reboot recovery

3. Windows users run the recovery-windows.bat file by double clicking on it from the freshly extracted zip file. Windows 7/Vista users should run the file as an administrator. On the other hand, linux users should run the recovery-linux.sh file. (Type ./recovery-linux.sh in shell and hit Enter.)

Now that rooting and recovery is done, you can go ahead and flash a custom ROM after wiping all your data and dalvic cache.

Only things of issue are one.) alarm clock had no pop up to dismiss or snooze the first time I used it. It’s already been great since then but wow- that was interesting. Had to turn it off to end the song! 2.) One day, all my imported (at Sprint store) contacts disappeared. Only the ones I had hand loaded directly remained. I lost ~ 113 names, numbers that I have no idea how to get back. They are not in my gmail or anything..

Trying to use your information regarding rooting my new htc evo.
However, your site like many others, assumes one knows how to “run the adb shell”, which is not obvious to me where or how to do that. Nothing on my htc evo (that i have found) seems to allow me to do that. Its not clear i even need to do that from the htc or from say, a pc with the htc connected as a drive.

I tried it, but did not work. When I pressed the down and power, it took me to reboot. after that I could never see a flas device. When I try to open the wi-fi tether, it marks me an error. What do I have to do to fix this matter. Thanks
